Will Your Pets be Safe During A Storm Disaster?

animals-storms.jpgThe Hurricane season is approaching and a good time to review all aspects of your hurricane plan, including what to do with the family pet. And if your plan doesn’t include provisions for Fido or Snowball, it might be time to revise it.

Well before the approach of a storm, pet owners should prepare a pet disaster supply kit. It should include needed supplies for your pet, as well as vital information, such as proper identification and immunization records and a current photo of your animal. Pet disaster supply kits should also include plenty of food and water, a carrier or cage, medications, a muzzle, collar and leash. If you have a cat, include a litter box and fresh litter in your supply kit.

Other evacuation options for pet owners include boarding the animal with a veterinary clinic or animal shelter, as well as asking friends or relatives out of the path of the storm to look after the animal. Owners should make these arrangements well in advance of the storm.  And be sure to include your own family survival kits.

Just before a storm approaches, pet owners should attach their name and evacuation address onto the pet’s collar. This can help someone return the pet to its proper owner, should the animal become lost during or after the storm. Having a microchip implanted into the pet may also help owners locate the lost animal.

Owners who have no choice but to leave their pets at home should make sure the animal is left indoors and loose with plenty of food and water. Leave the toilet bowl cover up and never leave a pet chained outside. Place a notice outside your house advising what pets are inside and provide contact information where you can be located.

We hope everybody stays safe and healthy in 2008!!

Other People Get Storms……..Not Me! I’ll get Pizza!!

pizza.jpgEvery year the same thing, hurricane watches and warnings. Every year I tell myself the same thing, “Not one storm has ever hit where I live”. Every year I don’t listen to myself.  But as soon as the “watch” comes on the screen we are off to store to buy flashlights, batteries, food supplies, water and on and on.  And they end up gathering dust because the storm never comes.  I have to admit in the last couple of years, we have eased the tension by ordering a pizza. How bad can it be if the Pizza guy will come.  Can’t be too bad. Right?  But by in large, it can still happen.

This year I’m not going to panic. I’m sick of wasting my life worrying about something I have no control over. I’m going to get prepared ahead of time. I’ll get a 72-hour emergency survival kit for my family of four and our two pets.  That way, I’ll just have to dust them off if they have been sitting as they have a long shelf life.  At least I’ll be acting responsibly by being prepared.

A blogger friend!

The 2007 Hurricane Season Was A Mild One!

australianbeach.jpgThe 2007 Atlantic hurricane season was less active than forecasters thought it would be, with six hurricanes developing instead of the nine predicted, a top weather researcher said Tuesday. Cooler temperatures inhibit hurricane formation, and wind shears can tear developing hurricanes apart. Forecasting hurricanes for more than two decades, and predictions for the season are watched closely by emergency responders and others in coastal areas. The Atlantic season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. This year, April and June forecasts predicted 17 named storms, including nine hurricanes, five of them major. In August, the forecast was lowered to 15 named storms, including eight hurricanes, four of them major. Instead, the year produced 14 named storms, including six hurricanes, two of them major. It’s the second straight year that more hurricanes were predicted than actually occurred.  But don’t get a false sense of security. It’s better to be prepared five years early than five minutes too late! More information is available regarding your safe survival.

Being Prepared For The Threats You Do Not Know

stormsurge.jpgThey are real possibilities and have happened before, recently as 2004 in the Indian Ocean. On December 26, 2004, a massive earthquake occurred under the Indian Ocean just off the coast of Indonesia. The 9.0 magnitude quake created a series of tsunamis that caused great destruction and loss of life throughout the Indian Ocean basin, within several hours of the initial event. Read for yourself at LaPalma

COULD THIS HAPPEN IN NORTH AMERICA? YOU BET!

More common threats like tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, ice storms, etc would be dwarfed by a giant tsunamis if it ever hit the east or west coast of the United States. Devastation and destruction would be felt as far as 100 miles inland. Lives lost would be in the millions. But most Americans are complacent and think it can’t happen here. It’s a horrifying possibility, but a real one. There are about 8-1/2 million people in the threat zone on the east coast alone. Can anyone ever be prepared for an emergency like this? Would any kind of survival kit help should the unthinkable happen? The answer is……you just don’t know. Depends on where you are and IF you are able to evacuate. But it‘s always good to be prepared in any event. Click here to learn more about survival.
