Yes, we live in the electronic age. From the time we wake up until we go to bed, almost every move we make involves electricity and electronics. We get up in the morning to a nice warm house, turn on the lights and coffee maker. We get the morning paper which was just printed a few hours ago. Then we’re off to a nice warm shower, blow our hair dry and off into the world for the day. If we need gas for our vehicle, a stop at the pumps with our credit card. If we stop at the store or a restaurant, we might use another credit card. A payday might mean a stop at our bank for a deposit. At the start of the week, or any day for that matter, we start writing checks to pay our bills. And it goes on and on. (Disaster Recovery Supply is starting to think ahead).
Now look at this brief scenario which happened recently. Starbucks is based in Seattle, WA which experienced a brief earthquake. This temporarily disrupted their computer server. All Starbuck locations are tied in directly to this main server and could not sell a cup of coffee anywhere because they could not take credit cards or cash because the registers wouldn’t open.
Now picture this on a global basis. Our world is surrounded by thousands of communication satellites which (unfortunately) govern our world. What “if” something disrupted their functions like sunspots, an errant meteor, some type of terror activity, etc. What “if” our communication connection were shut down without a remedy.
Now imagine waking up in the morning. The lights won’t go on. Coffee Maker won’t work. Refrigerator contents are spoiling. A cold shower. Can’t get gas because pumps won’t run. Can’t use a credit card anywhere because ATM’s, banks, stores are helpless without electricity which rely on electronics to operate. Stores may have supplies for a while, but won’t sell them to you unless you have cold cash. And you will need to stock up all you can before the next guy gets it because the store can’t restock as trucks won’t operate. And you won’t be able to call anybody because phones won’t work. No text messages!!
Credit cards and checks will be of no use and cash will be king. Forget about the value of our dollar compared with the Euro. The stock market will be gone! Cash will be cash…..no matter! With cash, you may be able to do all kinds of things you never thought of previously. You might be wise to start hoarding cash, and not in a safe deposit box. Without electricity, you won’t be able to get at it. Find a good and safe hiding place and keep it a secret. And make sure you have a bicycle!
Again, it’s always best to be prepared ahead of time for any type of event. Keep several disaster kits handy at all times for any kind of emergency. Remember, it’s best to be five years early than five minutes too late!
